My paintings reflect my passion for color and light. Through a gradual artistic process, my work has evolved away from an earlier interest in representing nature and towards the creation of luminous abstractions that silently resonate. These contemplative paintings are philosophical and attempt to articulate the subtle inner workings of natural forces and the mystic state.
Recent paintings are abstract and employ a range of idealized geometric, curvilinear and elliptical shapes with references to various atmospheric conditions and light as they appear in the natural landscape. I attribute my understanding of color and the creation of light illusions to a keen observation and love of the natural world. Now, this observation has gone beyond the world of surface appearance in order to understand and reveal natural forces hidden deeply within nature.
These paintings are executed with a great deal of intensity and evolve on the canvas from a thought and strong feeling into an image with multiple layers of meaning. The paintings wed concept with composition and color. At times, a trance-like state occurs and the painting just happens resulting in a work that stands on its own as a visual experience.
In contrast to my earlier more compositionally complex paintings, the recent work appears deceptively simple. The ideas behind them, however, exist on a deeper level of understanding. Within our present time and state of our culture, this type of inquiry is a challenge, yet my search continues. My work is in private and public collections and has appeared throughout the United States and internationally in numerous individual, juried and group exhibitions.
Currently, I teach a variety of courses including 3D and 3D design, color theory, photography, painting and drawing in the Department of Art and Design at California State University in Fresno
