Doug Hansen has been a Fresno-based artist and illustrator for over thirty years. Born in Fresno, CA in 1952, he is the eldest of six children in an artistic family. Doug is an associate professor in the Department of Art and Design at California State University, Fresno. He teaches rendering and illustration and considers it a privilege to teach at his alma mater. Doug illustrates a monthly article by well-known author Mas Masumoto for the Bee. The partnership with Masumoto has produced a book, illustrated by Doug, Letters to the Valley, published by Heyday Books in 2004. A second illustrated book by Masumoto and Hansen, titled Heirlooms: Letters from a Peach Farmer is expected in October 2007.
Doug collaborated with his mother, Janice, and brothers Keith and Craig, to draw and paint the 126-foot long mural permanently installed in the Woodward Park Regional Library. He is known locally for his 23 years of illustration work at The Fresno Bee including his weekly series of pen and ink drawings of Valley landmarks called Fresno Sketchbook. The Fresno Sketchbook drawings were published as books in 1991 and 1993.
In addition to the changing scenery of Valley life, the childhood characters of myth and fairy tale are recurrent subjects of his art. Playfulness, humor, vivid color, and toy-like forms are evident. A series of paintings based on the alphabet and elaborately illustrating characters from Mother Goose will be exhibited at Gallery 25 in August 2007. |
