| Heather Anderson's landscapes are about her passion for the uniquely beautiful wilderness places on our planet. Her paintings are not only about her actual experience of hiking to or just being in these places, but about her visual memory of the colors, space, shapes, and feeling of the place. She works from photographs and small sketches, and occasionally on site, when the distance from car to site is short enough to carry her portable easel and paints. After her first backpack trip a half century ago, she has gathered images not only from the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade mountains, but from the Southwest, the Mexican volcanoes, Peruvian Andes, the Himalaya, the Alps, and Spanish Pyrenees. Her recent landscapes are shown in series and include Yosemite waterfalls, Sierra High Country scenes, Mono lake views, reflections, and desert vistas. Painting these wilderness places is an attempt to show how unique they are and how important it is to protect them.
Anderson is deeply aware how ephemeral wilderness places are, and works as a volunteer with the Sierra Club on local and national environmental issues, informing, educating and urging protection. As art educator, she has worked with local teachers and students in colleges, at the Fresno Art Museum, and the San Joaquin River Parkway to open student eyes to our natural world and to help them express their artistic selves. Her hope is to connect with others through art in a concern for our remaining world of wilderness, and to share Rachel Carson's "sense of wonder."
